Davis, West Virginia

This week, Meredith and I drove from Athens to Davis, West Virginia! Her family has a little place down there and I went to stay with them for a week. We quarantined for two weeks leading up to the trip, and then rode in the same car together and I stayed in their house, unmasked! It felt REALLY WEIRD but really good.

We got there on Thursday. It was a beautiful day, and we went to the ski lift to enjoy the gorgeous fall foliage!

Beautiful!

Mer and Kate.

Look at those trees!

Whee! The ski lift was an excellent way to see the landscape.

We made soup and sandwiches for dinner.

And then we made a fire!

Let's all take photos of it!

Lucy being a good girl.

On Friday, we started the day off with a hike.

The forests are so different down there!

Look at all those mossy rocks!

Mer, Lucy and Kate!

That afternoon, we took another hike, to Bearden Rocks.

What a gorgeous day!

You almost feel like you're on the moon.

Two Kates and a Lucy.

For dinner, we had crockpot green chicken chili and salad. Yum!

On Saturday afternoon, we did more hiking! We went to Pendleton Point.

What a view!

Then we went to Blackwater Falls.

On the way home, we stopped by a cranberry bog. Pickings were slim, but we did get some berries!

Tacos for dinner!

On Sunday, Mer made an apple pie from apples that we picked in her yard!

And pulled pork sliders for dinner.

We put some of the cranberries we picked in the pie, too!

We did a lot of adventuring on Monday, my last full day there. We started off with Lindy Point.

LOOKIT!!!

Good enough view, or what?!

On the way to our next adventure, we pulled off at a scenic overlook. From there, you could see Pendleton Point, where we had gone on Saturday! Neat!

Our next stop was Elakala Trail.

It's a bit of a trek to get down to the falls, but we did it!

My shoe actually got wedged in a root on our walk down, and I had to untie it and take it off to get it out!!

Let's go!

That afternoon, Mer had an appointment so Pete took me on some more adventures. We went to a boardwalk in Canaan Valley!

Beaver Dams!

It was fun to see the valley from the bottom.

Next up, we visited Douglas Falls!

Hi, Pete!

Picking apples in the yard!

It's perfect!

On the last night of my trip, we found the JACKPOT cranberry bog! The others we saw on the trip were picked over, but this one was bountiful!

Look closely, they're in there!

We filled our bags! Cranberry picking was one of my favorite parts of the trip.

We got pizza from Sirianni's' Cafe for our last meal of the trip.

Sunrise on our last morning!

Kate's class was having a bike to school day. There she goes!

Before we hit the road to head back to Athens, Mer and I made one more visit to the cranberry bog. Can't stop, won't stop!

What a haul!

Gorgeous, beautiful berries.

Going to make lots of delicious things with these!

I had such a great visit to Davis! I finally understand why Mer, Pete and Kate love the Canaan Valley so much!

Happy Birthday Dad + Me: Pandemic Edition

Last year, Dad and I threw an epic birthday party for ourselves at Purple Chopstix. I turned 40, he turned 70. It was so fun!! So many of our friends gathered to celebrate with us! Look at all of those people in one room with no masks on!!!!!!!

Since this year is the global COVID-19 pandemic, we couldn't throw a big birthday  party with all of our friends. Instead, we gathered on Mom and Dad's porch! Purple Chopstix has been closed most of the year. They just happened to open the week of Dad's birthday, offering contactless pickup on the weekends!

How lucky for us! Here we are gathering to celebrate Dad's birthday.

Dad and I were lucky to have warm, beautiful weather on our birthdays.

Sushi appetizer.

Ben got seafood crepes.

Mom and Dad each got crab cakes.

I got the sweet potato peanut pasta.

Everything was SO delicious and it was wonderful to be enjoying Purple Chopstix food again!

Little Kate made our family favorite, Texas sheet cake!

Dad blew his candle out away from the table, so as not to spread germs.

Can he blow it out through the mask? Of course he can!

Two weeks later, we gathered again for another round of Purple Chopstix family birthday fun! This time, to celebrate my birthday!

Vana and Joe gave me some home brew for my birthday. Cheers!

Vana also gave me these Junk Party Jewelry Cool Ranch Dorito earrings. Isn't that the best name ever for an earring!??

Sweet potato bisque!

Relaxing on the front porch!

Kate got pesto pasta!

I got red curry with shrimp, and Ben got sweet potato peanut pasta with chicken! We love Purple Chopstix!!!

Lucy tried unsuccessfully to get a bite.

Instead of blowing out the candles, I waved them out using the force of my freshly-washed hands!

Poof!

Mmm, Texas sheet cake. You wish, Lucy!

Cooking club paddle board pandemic expedition

Cooking club paddle board pandemic expedition! We've been talking about doing this all summer, and we finally made it happen.

The quarantine has put a damper on hosting cooking clubs at our houses.

So we packed some dishes and hit the lake! The theme was basically "make something picnicky with barely any advanced notice." Because this was such a quickly planned cooking club, Summer already had plans that day and was unable to join us. We missed her!!

Nancy borrowed Riley's board, which is the same board that Yumi and I have. TRIPLETS!!!

We paddled to the far corner of the lake, where there are some picnic tables, and set up a socially-distant picnic.

In the front are delicious cups of chilled corn soup made by Nancy. Behind that, herby, creamy pasta salad featuring asparagus and smoked trout, made by Valerie!

The little burrito-looking things are my contribution: baguette sandwiches with brie, dijon and honeycrisp apple slices. Simple but delicious! On the right are Emily's deconstructed salad skewers, featuring marinated veggies and cheese tortellini! In the back, Yumi made vanilla bean panna cottas with white peaches. YUM!!

Valerie demonstrates the proper drinking technique!

My sandwich, unwrapped. Mmmmmmmm.

Heading back to our cars. We were so full, I'm surprised we didn't sink! What a delicious day.

Happy Anniversary to me and Ben!

Happy 8th wedding anniversary to me and Ben! Often we'll celebrate by going to Zoe for dinner, but since it's a pandemic right now, that wasn't an option. Instead, we recreated one of our favorite Zoe cocktails! The pondwater martini! Cheers!! Those are blue cheese stuffed olives. Mmm.

Another of our favorite traditions is to have a bunch of cheese and fruit and bread. Can't go wrong! Plus egg salad and meats!

Mmmm.

Happy anniversary!

Moonlit Paddle Attempt

Tonight our paddle board crew attempted to do a moonlit paddle. Tonight is a full moon! We hit the lake and waited for the sun to go down.

Emily!

Yumi!

Suzie and Valerie!

Unfortunately, it was way too cloudy to see the moon, and it ended up just being a dark paddle. It was still fun, though!

Pool Pizza Party!

Pools are a wonderful place to practice social distancing!

Even better if you can do so while eating pizza.

Pizza Pool Party!

Rainbow unicorn pegasus rafts also make social distancing possible. Yumi is untouchable up on that thing!
